Want a new look in your space without spending a dollar?
Let me show you how I recently completed a zero dollar room refresh and redesign.
I love a good challenge, especially a good design challenge!
Our family room got a makeover, but not the kind that costs hundreds of dollars.
I removed slip covers and switched a few key pieces around to give our space a whole new look.
Zero Dollar Room Refresh and Redesign
Family Room Before
It was so satisfying to complete this zero dollar family room refresh.
How to approach zero dollar room refresh and redesign.
1.Get inspiration!
Look at your favorite interior design magazine, Instagram account or a Pinterest pin you’ve saved. Check the colors and shapes that draw you to it. Is there a way you can re-create a color scheme, general feel or vignette with what you have in your space?
We often don’t realize a little bit goes a long way in satisfying our aesthetic needs.
If you can capture the essence of a room you like and then incorporate it, even the smallest bit of it into your own space, you’ll love the end result.
A zero dollar room refresh and redesign is the way to go when you love interior design on a budget.
2. Identify large pieces of furniture you can move around.
Make a note of larger furniture pieces in your home that are not too big and quite possible for you to move around by yourself, or with the addition of one more person.
These are the pieces that will really make for a big difference when changing up a space.
-My vintage black curio cabinet had the perfect little nook in our music room, but I knew it would also look great in our family room. It was a simple move with a big result.
-The same holds true for my Ficus tree. During the Summer, it’s just fine far away from our large windows, but during the winter months, it’s much happier if I put it right next to a window, and so I did. Moving it across the room completely change the space. Instant refresh with both the tree and me happier.
Read the special story on my Ficus tree here and how I replanted it.
-The rug that we had in the room looked beautiful, but I knew it would look beautiful in the family room as well. I love these smaller 5 x 7 rugs that layer so nicely on top of larger rugs because they are light and easy to move around.
Having just that little bit more color in the family room really warms it up for the Winter season.
Family Room After
3.Take before and after photos.
Make sure to take a before photo of your space so you remember how far you’ve come.
Once you start moving things around, taking and adding away as well as editing as you go, you’ll be surprised as to how much your space will change.
Looking at the before photo when you’re all finished is a very satisfying feeling and will help you see how far you’ve come.
4. Remove existing home decor.
Get as close as you can to starting from scratch when redesigning your room. Start anew and remove as many things from the space you’re working in as possible.
Don’t skip this step, even though you might be tempted to do so.
You want to take the time to do this before you begin your room refresh. Taking things out of your room will help you envision where it could go.
Giving yourself a clean slate is a great way to begin a room refresh. When you do this, you can envision clearly how the various pieces work together and how you feel about them.
5. Shop your house for home decor.
To shop your home means go from room to room and look at the home decor pieces within your spaces. Start to imagine using various pieces in new and different ways. This is how to give your space a transformation in a very budget friendly way.
Take a lamp from a bedroom, pillows from a living room and move them into a new space.
Together, they form a fresh combination and look completely different than how you were using them before.
Shop your space, and save your money!
6. Play with what you’ve got.
I think we’d all agree it’s surprising just how much stuff we have.
It’s easy to accumulate home decor but not really see it if we keep it in the same place for too long.
Try and keep the home decor that is not being displayed throughout your home all in one area.
Then go to this area as if it’s your own little boutique and mix and match this decor in the room you’re refreshing. Keep playing and enjoying the process of designing your new space until you’ve found the right combinations.
When you’re stuck. remember your inspiration photos. Take a close look at them to see just what is happening in the photo that draws you in. This will aid you in recreating what you’re loving.
Hopefully you’re inspired to try your own zero dollar room refresh and redesign.
So much fun awaits you!
