Amazing Dining Room Table Transformation

Can’t wait to show you this amazing dining room table transform.

And to think all it took was a can of spray paint.

This was something I thought about doing for so long.

Any project I do has to be really important to me because finding the time and energy to do home projects is not easy.

It also has to be able to be accomplished on a budge, of course!

How We Transformed Our Dining Room Table

I found this table at a pricey thrift store I rarely shop at.

I actually avoid this particular store because I find the volunteers there are unpleasant and the prices way to high.

However, I was looking for a round table and this was before I became familiar with Facebook Marketplace.

This thrift store has a hook up to a lot of estate sale furniture so I headed there in hopes of finding something great.

I did!

Why I love the shape of this table.

There something about a round table that is so welcoming.

No matter how many people, you can always pull up another chair and fit one more person.

This table also has a which is really nice at Holidays.

After many years of use our black table top became very scratched up.

I covered it up with a table clothes, but it was a hassle having to wash it almost every day instead of just wiping it off.

It was time for a touch up and I decided to go for a big change and paint it taupe.

Sand Paper and Spray Paint

The secret to how we transformed our dining room table was simple.

Sand paper and spray paint.

I didn’t even use a sander, just ran the sand paper over ever area of the table top a for a light rough up.

DIY TIP- Sanding gives paint the best chance of adhering to the surface.

Steps to Painting a Dining Table

  1. Sanded first with fine grid sand paper, and then removed the dust with a dust clothes.
  2. Removed the top and brought it outside and laid it on a paint tarp.
  3. With even stroked we spray painted a layer of paint and let it dry for an hour.
  4. Sanded more to get a smooth finish.
  5. Back outside for two more layers of paint, allowing ample time to dry in between.
  6. Sanded then painted the base of the table in a latex primer, then spray painted. (Doing this saved money on spray paint.)
  7. Finished the top only with a coat of clear matte sealer.

Budget Tip: Because I always like to save money I used a white oil based paint primer I already had on hand to prime the table black base.

This saved money I would have had to spend on another bottle of spray paint and made covering it with the French Beige a snap. I only had to put on one layer of spray paint to cover the original black paint..

Painting oil based paint over water based or latex is just fine, but don’t do the opposite. the paint won’t stay put or wear well if you do.

How many cans of spray paint did I need for the dining room table?

I only needed two cans of spray paint for this dining room table.

I was shocked, but it’s a great deal.

Like I mentioned, I used left over latex paint primer on the table base to cover the original black paint.

This meant I hardly used any French beige spray paint on the base.

How long did it take to complete this project?

It took two full days to complete this project because you need to allow the paint to dry between every application.

There were many thin layers of spray paint applied.

I also lightly sanded between each application and then removed all the dust.

Whether wiping, sweeping or vacuuming off dust it’s time consuming.

All worth it though!

Why did you choose the color beige?

The area the table is located is a bit of a bottle neck. I wanted a lighter color to give an airy feel.

White was too stark and beige hides imperfections and stains well.

When I shared this table on socials, someone mentioned they liked it black better than the French Beige.

I liked the black table for many years, but after painting it I knew I was right to go for it.

The whole room has a more open feeling now. Which I love!

Ok, I know you have to be thinking about something you could paint with spray paint now.

My advice is to not think about it too long. Trust your instinct, pick out your spray paint color and go for it!
