5 Ways to Move Forward On Your DIY Project When Overwhelmed

by

It’s week 4 of the One Room Challenge!

We’ve been experiencing a lot of frustration from what seems like a long list of dead ends.

Yep, it happens when you DIY.

Things never go as planned and you have to come up with solutions real quick.

The trick is not to let all the little things build up and slow you down. The goal of finishing your project will happen one step at a time. That’s what we’ve been challenged to do this week.

5 Ways to Move Forward On Your DIY Project When Feeling Overwhelmed

1. Think Positively

Yeah, I know you hear the “stay positive” thing a lot and maybe you’re even tired of it, but hear me out.

Staying positive and refusing to give into negative thoughts is one of the most powerful things you can do when DIYing, and in life in general.

Making something beautiful or improving something isn’t easy. If it was we’d all live in houses that look like the pages of Better Homes and Gardens. if you start a DIY project always be mindful to give yourself the best chance at enjoying it, and finishing it successfully, by taking on a positive way of thinking.

Staying positive truly makes the whole process so much better.

2. Look at How Far You’ve Come

I’ve had to do this a few times this past week.

Here’s what I said to myself and Mary. “Yes, we hit a wall and it put us back a few hours, but look at how good this looks now that it’s finished.” AND “Wow that mistake put us back several days, but we’ve accomplished so much already and we learned some new skills.”

Pointing out to yourself all your hard work is like patting yourself on the back and encourages you to move and accomplish more of your DIY goals.

3. Take Before and After Photos

Before and After photos are huge motivation. Look at them and be amazed at your hard work and ingenuity!

They can be of very simple changes, it still is your hard work and should be celebrated.

Here’s a few that make me smile.

4. Do What You Can In the Moment

When we’re working on an area of the bedroom and a problem comes up that stops us from continuing that work, it’s been important for us to find something else to start. It may be as simple as painting an outlet cover or sweeping up a mess in the room, but we find something to do.

Keeping momentum on your diy project allows you to be productive on your project.

It makes us feel more in control of the whole situation and we’re getting things done that will move us closer to our goals. Just don’t stop. Find a tiny project you can complete, research ideas for your space online, or lay out materials for another task to come.

As long as it’s an action that will help you complete your DIY project, it’s all good.

5. Pivot with Panache

Several of our original plans did not work out in the end. We’ve had to pivot and change the direction of some of our bedroom design ideas.

Instead of being sad that we can’t have what we had thought would be perfect, we’re taking the outlook that these new plan are part of a happy accident. The new plans are going to be even better than what we initially were thinking.

Not sure if they will, but see me being positive there?

And look what i found thrift shopping! Which I never would have found if I hadn’t had to go out to Lowes for the third straight day in a row because of DIY issues. Salvation Army is conveniently located across from our Lowes store.

Score!

Hopefully these suggestions will help you out the next time you feel stuck or overwhelmed with a DIY project. You’re not alone, it happens to all of us brave DIYers.

Hang in there, you’re doing awesome work that will make your home an even happier place for you and those you love.

Thanks for checking in on how we’re doing with our Parisian Boho Bedroom Retreat. Next week I’ll be sharing how we solved a major problem in Mary’s bedroom. Super excited to show you what we came up with!

You can also head over to Instagram and see what we’re working on in stories as well.
