Are you looking for tween bedroom ideas? These easy, inexpensive decor ideas make for a one of a kind space any tween girl will love. We used a super simple plan to create a feminine and sweet retreat for Elsa.

Tween Bedroom Ideas – Elsa’s Bedroom Makeover

For those of you patiently waiting for Elsa’s full bedroom makeover, this ones for you! Its taken longer than expected, but my nine year old daughter’s bedroom makeover is finally complete. You can see the mood board I made for it weeks ago here,

First, let’s look at how far we’ve come.

Here’s the Before.

Here’s the After.

We worked hard for the last several weeks and now we have an after my sweet girl loves.

Crystal Flush Lighting

This flush light fixture is one of Elsa’s favorite editions. New ceiling lighting definitely was a splurge. I had to talk Jeremy into it,  but it was a shockingly great deal. You can read more about it here in this blog post, and you can purchase it here.

Art

The art was bought fifteen years ago and used in our oldest bedroom when she was little. I love, love, love passing on treasures like this to her sisters. After I had bought this print the kids and I were bringing our cats to the vet and I met an artist painting a mural there. It turns out he was the artist of the print I bought, and a lovely man. I painted the silver frame fold to pull into the other warm golds in the room around it.

Several furniture flips came together finishing this room, and the storage chest is one of my favorites. As always I learned a few things while this room was coming together. For instance, did you know vinyl can and should be sanded prior to painting? You can see how we transformed this chest in this post here.

One of the biggest ways we saved money on this room makeover was by painting the walls instead of adding wallpaper. We had so much fun creating this floral wallpaper look with paint. Read more about the process here.

Thrifted finds are at the center of Elsa’s room design. I’ve collected items over the last several months that I knew I might like to use in her space. This vintage lucite wastebasket is one of them. If you want to add character and originality to a space include unique finds whether they’re vintage or not isn’t important to me. If they have a great look I love, they’re in and part of the room design. Here’s a list of other thrift finds in her room.

Vintage and Found Objects Used

  • Mirrors
  • Art
  • Dresser
  • Bookshelf
  • Lamp
  • Bed skirt
  • Bedspread
  •  Nightstand
  • Pedestal
  • Rug
  • Small containers

Gallery Wall

Every space could use a gallery wall. I really enjoy the whole process of collecting the pieces and then curating that collection and figuring out what goes where.

The abstract art was painted several years ago by me. The large vintage mirror was given to me by my Grandma because she knew how much I loved it. The small vintage mirrors I found while thrifting. Elsa has commented on how much she appreciates the light in her room so I thought I’d try and add even more with mirrors.

Elsa’s headboard is a great DIY that makes a big impact for very little effort. I show you step by step how we made it here.

As a creative and designer it’s my job to find solutions to interior design problems in my home, at least I’ve decided it is. No one knows your home better than you. I knew that the layout in Elsa’s room made it challenging to place the bed. If it went next to the large window a portion of any headboard always overlapped the window. We tried putting the bed there anyways, but the look of the window being somewhat blocked by the bed annoyed me. Like for years people, it annoyed me for years.

I finally decided I did know best and came up with an idea to center the bed under the small window and frame the windows with drapes. Best decision ever!

Not only do the drapes add a soft, plush feel the her bedroom, but they also hide the fact the windows have no case molding. They do this as well as  emphasize the headboard by drawing your eye to that area and upward.

We painted this marble  pedestal white and it makes the perfect little nightstand.

DIY Projects Completed for this Bedroom Makeover

This room turned out better than I imagined. All the time and effort is worth it to see Elsa so happy in her space. At night when I tuck her in we still look around and say how much we love it in here. Priceless!  Although, with all the DIY, furniture flips, thrifting and bargain hunting I did to create this space, it didn’t cost much at all.

What’s your favorite part of Elsa’s room?

I’d love to know, tell me in the comments!

I am many years past being a “tween” – but I am in LOVE with this bedroom! I was particularly taken with the hand painted flowers on the wall instead of using wallpaper. Absolutely stunning. Well done!!

This is lovely! My daughter (who is only 8) would love to paint her door a different color. And painting the walls… OMG she’d be in heaven! I can’t believe you paint those flowers on the wall. It looks like real wallpaper! It’s beautiful!

My daughter is 9 and she loved being able to choose the colors she wanted. Painting the door was a way of giving her more control over her own room. I don’t have to see that much pink everyday because when I’m in there the door is open. 🙂 Her choice of periwinkle showed me color on the walls can be really nice because I love it now. Have a great day Chelsea!
