Elsa’s Little Girl Bedroom Makeover

Designing my kids bedrooms with them makes me so happy. I love getting their opinions and hearing their thoughts about what they want their rooms to look like. It’s important they each feel they have a special space of their own, and I want them to have a say in how it looks. As a creative and artist spaces, especially bedrooms, have a big effect on me and I know they do on children as well.

Elsa’s Glam Book Lovers Bedroom

Two Summers ago I finished Grace Lynn’s bedroom. I got started on her big sister Elsa’s room, but got busy with other things and never completed it. Elsa turned nine in February and I set a goal to finish her bedroom this month. It’s been quite a month so far, but a mother’s love and determination can’t be underestimated. She so sweet and patient with me about it all and that just makes me more determined to make it beautiful for her.

Elsa’s Wish List

Elsa’s main request was that we use the color periwinkle and pink. It just so happens that the Pantone color of the year for 2022 is Very Peri so we were excited to work from there. Although I’m not a big fan of pink, in a little girl’s room I love it. My goal is to add it in ways that wasn’t overpowering. I have a few ideas on how to do that.

After talking with her about what she needed and wanted in her room I came up with these four mood board. Mood boards are so helpful for kids and parents when designing a space for their use. Once the vision was set and ok’d by Elsa I got to work. First was figuring out a timeline to get it done by the end of March.

We’re still deciding on some aspects of the room’s design, but we know for sure we’re going to do the following:

To Do List

  1. Recover her headboard with periwinkle fabric
  2. Add a rug
  3. Paint toy chest
  4. Find a low cost curtain rod solution
  5. Replace ceiling fan with pretty light fixture
  6. Paint and stencil accent wall
  7. Find pink accent pieces
  8. Hang curtains
  9. Gallery wall or large piece of art

Thrift Flips and Paint

Several of the pieces in her bedroom need to be touched up with white paint so I’ll be doing that this week as well. So excited to see this bedroom come together for my sweet little girl. Having her help as she can is such a great way to spend time together and teach her new skills.

Did I mention we’re dong this on a budget? If you know me you sort of figured that out, but yes it’ll be on a tight budget. I’ve already splurged and bought a new light fixture to replace her “not cute” ceiling fan that doesn’t work well. Also splurging on decorative pillows for her room, but the rest is either from Amazon.com or thrifted.

Come back Wednesday to see how I’m adding a big pink statement that Elsa will love and I can live with. It can be done friends. My trick allows kids to choose their favorite color combination with both parent and child ending up happy. I’ll show you Wednesday!

Do you let your kids choose their bedroom wall color?
