We didn’t plan it this way, who ever does? Even so, over the years we’ve given four makeovers in one versatile space.
Our front room, otherwise known as the music room, as accommodated us in many ways.
It’s been a formal living room when we didn’t it, a dining room when we wanted, and a lounge/tv room when we felt the need.
It’s a versatile and tricky space all at the same time.
With enormous heights and a narrow width, it hasn’t always been clear how we should best use or decorate this room, but we tried.
Oh have we tried!
It’s been a blast experimenting with it, and the whole family is thankful for the extended elbow room this area of our home adds.
Room Transformations – Four Complete Makeovers in One Versatile Space
Let’s start at the very beginning.
Yucky carpet, no fireplace mantel, beige walls.
Yeah, we’ve seen enough here, let’s move on.
We did improve our front room by removing the carpet and painting the floor and walls. It’s amazing how much that alone can help a space feel better.
At first we called it the front room because it’s just off of our front door on entering.
A few years later we laid plywood floors in instead of spending thousands on laminate wood flooring.
You can see how we managed that project here.
Definitely one of our best and most cost effective home renovation projects to date.
1st Transformation of our Versatile Front Room
The Music Room
We are a musical family and I really wanted a place were we could gather and make music together. The piano on one end of the room and the guitar on the other seemed a perfect match.
I actually looks very pleasing, but my kiddos don’t practice enough to make this the soul purpose of this space.
They watched tv in here as much as played music.
This music room served as a mood lifter for me. Every time I walked by it I sighed with contentment. It was just so pretty and filled with almost all thrifted goodness.
And it still is the place we go to make music. The piano and guitars have stayed on the walls ever since.
2nd Complete Makeover of the Space
The Dining Room Decision
This dining room switch up was a big decision.
I had long ago found a beautiful, long wood table that I had made even longer. I knew we would probably only use it on very special occasion like birthdays and holidays.
Still I dreamed of eating lovely meals on beautifully set table settings before the fireplace. And we did that, just not much.
Most of the time the kids worked in here or played in here and it was a hot mess.
That I did not like because rooms have to have order for me.
The dining room table is amazing, but it now lives in the basement as a ping pong table.
The kids use it more this way than as a formal dining table.
So be it, they’re happy.
3rd Room Transformation
The Game Room Idea
At some point along my Instagram scrolling I saw a game room set up of a round table flanked by four chairs,
It intrigued me and I envisioned our family playing games around it and the thought was amazing.
Months later I found four barrel chairs for $5 a piece and decided it was a design sign.
Design signs, it’s a thing! Start looking for your design signs.
Anyway, the barrel chairs were a 90’s evergreen with a lot of fading from the sun.
I found these slip covers here with our neutral palette.
Consequently, reality is did not match fantasy.
Although the girls loved playing Barbies in front of the fire with the table being their house, we did not play many games as I had imagined.
4th Makeover of this Versatile Space
The Lounge Area
We went with the best of both worlds and left two of the barrel chairs as well as the end table after we added the new to us sofa.
And yes, we always clean our used sofa’s very well.
In the corner I tucked in an antique dresser, and a little more color added to the whole room.
We love the music room/lounge room/game room as it is now but…
it won’t stay this way for long.
We want a larger, more comfortable sofa and I’m looking on Marketplace.
When I find it, that’ll change everything once again, which is part of the fun around here.
Till next time, enjoy your day my friends!
