Welcome to Life As Art #28!

Peony Season

And just like that the peonies have come and gone. The short season is such a lovely one and thankfully we can count on it happening every single year.

Does life happen to you or do you happen to life?

For me it’s a little of both. There are so many more things in life we can’t control than things we can. Accepting this is a path to peace. The need for control comes from a place of fear. The fear of loss or pain can sometimes stop us from living life fully. It can also cast a shadow on what really is important to us because when we live in fear of losing something or someone we don’t live fully. Life is unpredictable. The longer I live the less surprised I am by life’s surprises. Things change and people change, including ourselves.

Weathering Change

Holding on to our core values has been incredibly important to me while moving through life’s seasons. Although we change, our core values probably will not. It’s been said by psychologists that our personalities don’t really change much after twelve years old. Think back to who you were at twelve and you’re more than likely just a more mature version of that person. Scary, but reassuring as well.

When I was twelve year old I desperately needed peace in my life. I valued it then and I value it now. Knowing your own boundaries and not allowing anything or anyone past those boundaries protects our peace.

Our environments protect our peace as well. Our home is a place that holds many activities, but maybe the most important one is as a haven of peace. Carving out those spaces in your own home even if they are as small as the corner of a room or a closet is essential to maintaining peace.

As life happens all around us, let’s happen to life as well. Find peace, especially at home.
