The story of how we began our bedroom makeover started with a thrift store find.
I mean don’t they always? That’s normalish, right?
In my world many interesting DIY home design projects started because I found an incredible deal at a thrift store. This bedroom makeover was one of those times.
How We Began Our Bedroom Makeover
Our Bedroom Before
Nothing was wrong with our primary bedroom. We did miss not having a ceiling fan, but we live in Michigan and Summer go by fast, plus we have air conditioning. We also lived without a proper headboard, however my DIY headboard was just fine and Jeremy and I would have kept our bedroom is if we hadn’t found one special piece of furniture for a crazy deal.
But I’m getting ahead of myself!
Let’s talk about the nitty gritty of this bedroom makeover and the first steps we took.
How We Began Our Bedroom Makeover
Everything up and out!
The hardest part of any DIY for me is starting the project. Our bedroom makeover was no different. I had talked with Jeremy for weeks about giving our bedroom a makeover, but he didn’t fully commit to the idea.
One day the spirit moved me, as my Mama used to say, and I just started moving everything out!
I took the bedding off and then the mattress. I stored a lot under our bed and it just kept piling up. Out of sight out of mind.
You can go here to see the Instagram Reel of the chaos that was under our bed.
Going forward I’m keeping it simple and only storing a few things under the bed.
Can we talk about the fact that the first time I painted this room I didn’t have the energy to paint behind the headboard?
Decisions always come back to haunt you.
Not sorry I painted over the khaki though. Not the best color on me or our bedroom walls.
DESIGN HACK
*If you want more cushion under your feet, take foam squares put them under the rug surrounding you bed. A nice added bit of comfort for the coziest place in our home.

Removing Window Treatments In Our Bedroom Makeover
How do you know you have a supportive spouse?
You know because when he comes home from work and sees his whole bedroom pulled apart with no where to sit, instead of getting mad he just pitches in and helps you. Yes, Jeremy is the best!
These homey comb window treatments came with the house and although they worked fine I was more than ready to let them go. We donated them to the Restore.
I filled in the holes with caulk, sanded and then painted.
Painting Choices In Our Bedroom Makeover
I was either going with a strong dark color or white in our bedroom makeover. When in doubt I always go with a lighter color because if I do want to paint over it, it’s a much easier process to paint over.
Previously I had painted one wall a grey and the other two walls a warm cream.
This time I kept it super simple and went with Ultra White from Valspar on all four walls. A bright, clear white that we’ve been really happy with.
Paint Tools We Used In Our Bedroom Makeover
Tell mw I’m not the only one who has kids that doodle on your walls.
I’m a creative so you would think I could appreciate them expressing themselves through art, but I do not on my walls.
MORE DIY ROOM MAKEOVERS
Ready to see it finished!
I started my bedroom makeover , then Dad started feeling poorly.
So maybe I’ll start again in Feb.
I’ve been thinking of you Kathy. So sorry for your loss. What a beautiful bond you have with him. That kind of love last forever.
Sometimes, we just have to wait until that moment comes then all those changes get made! Having a supportive husband is a blessing.
I agree on both the waiting and especially the supportive husband.
I already like your room before the update so I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
So nice of you Rachel, thanks friend! It’s been a slow makeover and I’ve liked the slower pace.
