Are you ready for a dramatic wallpaper bathroom makeover?
Here’s the before and what we were working with. Believe me it’s an improvement from the bright red walls we found here when we first moved in.
Since then our downstairs half bath had only been given a coat of paint. I was content with it for several year, but it was time for a change.
I’ll also show you the steps I took to hang wallpaper fast and easy.
Dramatic Wallpaper Bathroom Makeover

Choose Wallpaper
Photowall has so many stunning design, mural and wall art you will be amazed. There’s something for everyone and every style!
Our half bath had been on my list of projects for at least a year. Meanwhile, I found a handsome bathroom vanity for half off at Lowes, I knew a dramatic wallpaper bathroom makeover was coming.
Even though it was a complete makeover I still utilized the design concept of reusing. The light fixture and mirror in our half bath stayed. I didn’t even spray paint it can you believe it?!
The tile also stayed put because It was a in great shape and I love the style. Jeremy and I put it in about eight years ago, but when you choose a classic tile you can be set for a couple of decades.
Gather Your Supplies
Mix Powdered Glue into Paste
Apply Paste to Wall in small Sections
This is the easiest and most fun part. Don’t be afraid to really get a heavy coat of paste on, but not too much that it slides off the wall.
Trying Out the Dramatic
I chose the Archipelago wallpaper. It’s almost black with loads of texture and warm colors throughout. This wallpaper is a sophisticated print on a large scale. As a result the artistic botanicals are displayed beautifully.
Photowall sends you everything you need to get the job of wallpapering done. Wallpapering in a small space is not an easy task, but the good news is because it’s small square footage, you get the job done faster.
The long roles, which are numbered so you can’t mess the order up, allow you to cover a large amount of space at one time and make for less trips up and down on your ladder.
Hang the Wallaper on Wall
Start applying the wallpaper strips to the wall from top to bottom. Over lap the seams by about a quarter inch.
Make sure to get any bubbles out by smoothing the wallpaper. I like to us my hands, but you can us the flat tool they provide for this as well.
Cut off any wallpaper that hangs over your molding.
Paint Your Molding
For an even more dramatic look, paint your molding the same color as your wallpaper.
And you’re done!
After the wallpaper was applied we went on to add more drama by painting the molding black.
I mean why not, the wallpaper almost demanded we did!
Style In the Details
Three details really make this bathroom sing. Painting the molding black, creating a gallery wall and adding a fixtures in brass.
Loved the shape of the cabinet hardware, so instead of buying new knobs to match the gold faucet I spray painted the existing ones to match with this spray paint HERE. First I roughed up the hardware with fine grit sand paper to help insure the paint would stick, and thankfully it has.
I used this spray paint HERE and it was a perfect match. Be ready for several Christmas projects to come where I’ll use this gorgeous color! I had found some beautiful vintage art with gold frames so I also used the same spray paint on a few of the thrifted mirrors for the walls. A gallery wall in a half bathroom was just the added touch of drama I was looking for.
I love this dramatic wallpaper bathroom makeover! If you’re thinking of trying a design style or color you’ve never tried before, go for it. Every time I open the door to this room I’m enveloped by the dark tones and forest like feel, it’s magical.

Your bathroom makeover is really stunning!!! I’m curious, how did you decide on the Archipelago wallpaper design, and do you have any tips for someone looking to embark on a similar bathroom makeover project?
Hi Alisha, thanks so much! In regards to the wallpaper decision, I wanted to try a dark wallpaper and I also love all things flora and fauna so when I saw the Archipelago had both I knew it was the one.
