DIY Fabric Upholstered Headboard

Elsa’s bedroom makeover is coming along. You can see more of what we’ve done in her room here (moodbaord) and here (furiture flip).

When it came to her headboard I wanted to avoid painting it and instead opted for a simple upholstered headboard.

I found the perfect periwinkle fabric to match her walls on Etsy. By the way, I think Etsy is one of the most under rated places to shop for home decor. It’s provided me with great finds again and again.

We cut plywood in a arch and attached two wood legs on the back. Then we covered it with an old comforter which we staples on. After this the periwinkle fabric was added. I chose to only staple the fabric on the headbaord in a few key places so that when, not if, it needed to be washed I could easily remove it and then put it back on again.

Several years ago I was on a periwinkle kick and used it a lot in my abstract art. My love of painting continues although I don’t paint as much as I used to. Anyways, I went looking and found photographs of a few of those paintings.

I knew they needed to be used in this room so I had them made into pillows. Elsa loves that her mama created them and I love that they’re one of a kind, Have to say it’s really a sweet thing that she’s so happy with them. The blues and lavenders of the art look beautiful with the periwinkle.

Here’s the second pillow I had made from my art. The pink from the door gets pulled in with this one. Which one do you like best?

An upholstered headboard is a great option for a little one. I mean, I can remember so many times my kids bumped their heads on their headboards. Not so tough when it’s padded and upholstered. If you like reading in bed they’re also nice for some added cushion and comfort.

If you don’t have a table saw or cutting out your headboard is holding you back from trying this project, no worries. Head to your local hardware store or lumberyard. If you buy your plywood from their store they will often cut out the shape you want for a small fee.

So if you need a headboard or want to replace one of yours, this is the prefect diy project for you.xo Maria
