Pottery Barn Gold Mirror Hack

by

So excited to show you this Pottery Barn gold mirror hack.

Almost a year ago while strolling through a thrift store I scored  huge, beautifully curved wood mirror.

Leave it to a thrift store to make you start dreaming.

I knew it called for a complete change if it was going to become my dream mirror inspired by he Pottery Barn mirror seen all over social media.

Actually I like mine even more than anything I’ve seen.

Here’s what I did to transform it.

Pottery Barn Gold Mirror Hack

This Pottery Barn mirror is one of my dream mirrors. The classic shape and timeless design kept it on my short list of “if I had the money I’d buy it” for a long time.

At the price of $499 it was never a serious contender for my home, but the classic style is beautiful.

Thrift Store Find

You can imagine how thrilled I was when I stumbled across this vintage solid wood mirror several months ago.

As I checked out I tired to act casual, but inside I was jumping up and down. I knew immediately I wanted to paint it gold, but it took a long time to make that happen. You know how busy day to day life can get.

Transforming a Mirror with Paint

The goal was to lighten this mirror up with paint. I knew I wanted gold, but the exact gold is sometimes hard to find. Lucky for me I’ve been using this incredible gold paint from Rust Oleum!

It’s perfect because of both it’s tone and consistency. If you ever wonder if you should spray paint a piece, you may want to try this oil based paint instead. I love it and also love the price. So much less expensive than spray paint.

DESIGN TIP: Make sure you’re ready to either clean the oil based paint off your brush with mineral spirits or use a disposable sponge brush.

First I put a heavy coat of paint on with a sponge brush. Then I took a bristle brush and smoothed over the paint.

It gives the mirror some depth as the wood base color shows through just enough.

If paint gets on your mirror, no worries. Let it dry and although it might take longer if you’re using oil based paint as I did, it will dry.

When it does simply take a razor and scrap off the paint from the mirror and wipe it away.

Style Your Vintage Mirror

When you find or purchase a mirror this beautiful don’t forget to put the effort into styling it well. It can mean the difference between an ok look and an amazing look. I’d rather have amazing every time. Wouldn’t you?!

When styling this mirror I went with simple decor and a clean white, silver and green color palette. To give yourself a starting point before you begin styling choose a large object, like this lamp then balance it by using another piece on the opposite end. In this case the vase with greenery worked well. Fill in between the two pieces with home decor of various textures and heights.

I had a really good time painting this mirror. Nothing is perfect in our home. I don’t want to get stuck thinking things should or can be.

My goal is to always try and have fun when I DIY and style our home, and I hope to inspire you to do the same.

Thanks for following along on my home design adventures. I appreciate you!

What a great mirror score and you elevated it to a whole new level. Thanks for the tip on the paint. I’m not loving how rub n buff works for me. I’m going to give this a try. I always love your projects.
