Mornings are important, and I’m being intentional about starting my days well.
Here are 7 simple steps to supercharge your morning routine.
Even if you only try to implement one of them you’ll have improved your whole day.
Don’t give up if it takes a while to make one or all of these habits stick.
They say for a habit to truly become habit, you need to do it for six months.
7 Simple Steps to Supercharge Your Morning Routine
1. Wake Up to a Traditional Alarm Clock
Now, I’m sure I’ll get some push back on this one, but hear me out.
Don’t use your phone as an alarm.
When we wake up to our phone alarm, we have to touch it to turn it off. Just the act of touching your phone immediately puts you in contact with technology.
I’m on my phone a lot, like a lot folks. I don’t want it to be the first thing I touch when I wake up. Doing so makes it far too easy to open up the phone and get on Facebook or Instagram first thing in the morning. I don’t want that either.
Instead I want to begin my day with intention, and move on to the next six steps.
Choose an alarm clock you like to look at
Don’t hate on your alarm clock. It’s a helpful part of your morning routine. If you select one with great design it’ll be a much happier process when it goes off in the morning.
We use this one here in our bedroom because I think the little round feet are so cute.
This one here with the gold accents is really good looking also.
Our girls use this non ticking one (I bought it for all three) and our son likes this digital alarm clock. It comes in a pretty mint and lavender color as well.
2. Bedside Morning Water
Prepare your morning water. the night before. Drink it right when you wake up.
In the morning our bodies are dehydrated from not having liquids for a span of seven plus hours as we sleep.
Drinking water right away in the morning is a great way to give our bodies the moisture it needs to function at our best.
Too often my mornings fly by and I forget to drink water leaving me tired and unprepared for all that I need to get done. It’s better to get your water in first thing so that you can check it off your list and move on.
We keep this water purifier here in our bathroom which makes it super easy to remember to drink our water.
3. Put On Workout Clothing
If you wake up and put on your workout clothes you are telling yourself that you’ll be moving your body soon.
This is the first step to working out so begin with it in mind and get dressed with it in mind as well.
Set out your workout clothes or comfortable clothing the night before. Just having the right clothes on for exercising will up the chances that you’ll get that morning walk in or do a few lunges before you start your day.
Even if you’re only in these clothes for ten minutes, it’s worth it! Tomorrow you might be in them exercising for half an hour..
When it comes to health every minute of movement counts!
4. Make Your Bed
Making your bed is a quick win that lasts all day long.
When we accomplish something right away in the morning it gives us a mental boost.
We can already check a very visible task off our list and then move on to harder things.
It’s like telling ourselves, See you got this!
Besides that, it’s so nice to climb into a made bed when you’re ready to unwind and go to sleep at night.
As you can tell it’s well worn and it’s also well loved.
5. Speak Your Intentions and or Prayer
Setting your intentions and or praying out loud is an incredible motivator and provides encouragement for the soul.
Give yourself a blessing and a pep talk each morning.
Hear your own voice speaking positivity!
You might call it self care or connecting with your Creator, or just being kind to yourself.
Taking a minute to thank God for the breath of life fills me with peace.
Let’s acknowledge how amazing it is we are here on earth!
Speaking your intentions and or praying out loud is the most important part of my morning routine.
6. Make a Breakfast Shake
Whenever it is that you break your fast and have breakfast, let it be a shake packed with healthful benefits.
Noon is when I break my fast, but I make my shake right away in the morning.
Whenever I don’t do this I pay the price the rest of the day. I eat more and I have less energy than when I have my breakfast shake at noon.
My shake recipe has changed throughout the years, along with how often I drink it. Currently it satiate my appetite and reflects my bodies need for protein.
Here’s my Breakfast Shake Recipe (I use one scoop of each powder)
7. Stretch Your Body
Wake up your body with some gentle stretching.
You’re already in your workout clothing so half the battle is won! Now just pick up your stretch band and stretch!
I use a few different ones. You can find the one I’m using in the photo here. Very affordable.
Again the visual fact of a stretch band reminds me to use it to stretch my muscles.
Stretching is actually something I like to do, but I find it hard to take the time to do stretch in the morning.
To help/trick myself with this habit I tell myself I only have to hold one stretch for 30 seconds.
That’s it, no more.
But of course I always do more because I’m already dressed for it and deep down I know I’ll feel so much better if I do.
Research has shown 30 seconds to be the optimal time to hold a static stretch. This amount of time allows the muscles to relax and be prepped to work optimally throughout the day.
Even if I only stretch for 5 minutes doing it every day, and making it part of my morning routine, leads to progress, health and productivity.
A good morning routine can lead to other good choices throughout the day.
Having a set schedule in the morning lessens the chance of a stressful day.
When you automatically know what you should be doing next to accomplish your goals, you can relax.
Knowing that you’re in a routine doing your best and getting done the things that are a priority to you is a great feeling..
Are any of these ideas new to you? What do you do for your morning routine that brings the best reward?
