How To Decorate with Curtains for a Chic Cozy Look

by

Do you have a wall of windows?

If so, read on and see how to decorate with curtains for a chic and cozy look.

Our builder grade home has a huge bank of windows in our front room.

I love these windows, but have never added curtains because we have two large trees outside that give us privacy.

Recently ooooo suggested I try their custom curtains and gifted me these a gorgeous set.

I decided to us them to soften the space by only framing the windows to allow the maximum amount of sunshine to come in.

How To Decorate with Curtains for a Chic Cozy Look

Step One – Measure Your Windows

This step is important.

Maybe that’s why I procrastinated on doing it for too long.

My advise. Get your ladder out and start!

Measure with your trusted old tape measurer and then measure it again, and then one more time.

I found this amazing gadget here and it’s on my DIY wish list.

It would have made this process easier.

If you still like the old school tape measurer, but want to be a little tech, this one here gives you the best of both worlds.

Step Two – Choose Your Window Treatments

Curtain Rods

I’d highly suggest measuring your windows before you start to look for window treatments.

Many curtain rods and curtains only come in select sizes.

I had my heart set on a specific curtain rod. After measuring our windows I realized the brand I was interested in didn’t carry curtain rods in that length.

Thankfully I found these curtain rods HERE.

They are such great quality and very budget friendly.

They also come in 5 extended sizes, making them perfect to accommodate larger windows.

Curtain Rings

Do you want to use curtain rings when decorating with curtains?

If yes, keep in mind your measurements and the length of the curtain rings.

I went with these rings here .

Love them, they are the same finish as the rod.

The double ring is so elegant. It’s the little details in the end that make the project sing.

Curtains

My custom velvet curtains here are just gorgeous.

You can choose from so many customizations.

Check out all the colors here.

I went with pinch pleated at the top and it looks so good!

DESIGN TIP: Although I didn’t want to block out any light from this window, I also added a blackout backing for a heavier look and feel to the curtains. Glad I did!

If you have a standard window size and don’t need custom curtains?

These Homerilla curtains here are just like mine and ready to order in several sizes.

The windows in this room are huge and I knew for years I wanted curtains, but the cost blew me away.

Enter Homerilla. I almost went with a forest green, but ended up choosing their beige.

It’s the perfect cool, putty beige.

This color adds some depth, yet holds down the consistently neutral, earth tones I use throughout our home.

Despite looking like expensive window treatments, these curtain are affordably priced.

Step Three – Hang Your Window Treatments

Thankfully I hade Jeremy’s help on this one.

He used the level to make sure he was installing the curtain rod evenly.

He marked then drilled holes for the curtain braces.

We put the curtain rings on the rod and then hung the curtain by the ring hooks.

Bracing the rod on the ladder made that part easier.

Jeremy simple lifted it up and hung the whole window treatment at once.

Because we have large trees just outside these windows and little need for privacy, I didn’t have to have curtains.

However, I did want the cozy, warm feeling that curtains can add to a space.

Now this bank of windows is flanked on both sides with beautiful hanging fabric that really completes the whole room.

I made sure to hang a few rings to the left and right of the curtain rod hooks so we could close the curtains part way in case we wanted.

We’ve never done this but it’s nice to have options.

Most builder grade homes have sliding glass doors and this same window treatment option works great for those as well.

We have sliding glass doors in our basement and plan to use the same technique there as well, but they will close all the way for added privacy.

After the curtains hung for a couple of days I took the steamer to them to get out extra tough creases.

Decorating with curtains give your home a cozy, chic feel.

Having curtains in our music room completely changed this space. I’m so pleased with the look.

If you’re feeling inspired then I’ve done my job.

Grab you ladder and a partner and get to it! You’ll love the look when you’re finished hanging you window treatments.
