Do you love the smell of fresh evergreens at Christmastime? You can get the lovely scent when you use fresh evergreen Christmas arrangements.

A Classic Christmas Choice

When you think of Christmas colors green and red come to mind. When I envision the color green at Christmas, I see Christmas trees and evergreen branches, and all the lovely natural plants that keep their color during the Winter. Decorating with faux greenery is very convenient. There are no needles to poke you or have to sweep up. Still, there’s something so pure and beautiful about using fresh evergreen Christmas arrangements.

There isn’t a more classic scent than evergreen during the Holiday season. Here are four ideas for your evergreen Holiday decorations.

4 Fresh Evergreen Christmas Arrangement Ideas

1. Evergreens in Vessels

Make Your Own!

One of the reasons I choose to decorate with fresh evergreens and other Winter branches is the crisp scent they bring to the home. The traditions of Christmas are made so much better by what we smell. Whether oven-baked cookies, peppermint, cinnamon, cloves or evergreens, they all bring back great memories of Christmas times we’ve enjoyed.

Use Various Kinds of Evergreens

Evergreens fall under the variety of tree called coniferous. Different from deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the Fall, coniferous trees keep their needles. You might be surprised to know there are 650 species of conifer. During the Winter months I like to clip evergreen branches and take them into our home. Their color during the long snowy months in Michigan are appreciated, and I’m so inspired by their beauty.

I made an advent wreath from fresh holly we have growing near our house. The boughs with red berries are from our burning bushes which are a bright red leaf in the Fall. Check your yard for Winter foliage, you may be surprised at some of the lovely things you find.

2. Evergreens in Advent Wreaths

Unlike previous Holiday Seasons, this Christmas we used a lot of evergreens in our decorating. The middle two kids were so very helpful and went out to forage for greenery on a snowy day. In our woods and yard they found several different kinds of evergreen branches, as well as holly branches and a couple of boughs that had berries on them.

3. Evergreens on a Fireplace Mantle

Display Evergreens in Various Ways

One of the easiest ways to display evergreens is to put them in vessels of water. I filled vases with several different kinds of evergreens and spread them throughout different areas around our house. They last a long time and the water keeps them from drying out just as it would a bouquet of flowers.

For the first time we also made a garland for our mantel with evergreen branches. Whenever possible give your evergreens water so they last longer. I mentioned my secret in this post here to keeping small cuttings crisp and fresh longer. I use these florist water tubes here.

4. Evergreens on a Bookshelf

I love our garden except in the Winter when it’s so cold. Bringing evergreens, into our home this time of year lets us enjoy nature while still staying warm. Take a look and see what you kind find in your own outdoor spaces to decorate for the Holiday season. Decorating with evergreens for Christmas helps make your home feel cozy and festive.
