Easy DIY Painted Wallpaper

tween bedroom blue and white

As you probably know if you’ve been following along here for a bit, budget friendly design and DIY are some of my favorite topics and the main focus of this blog.

I’m always looking for ways to keep home design and decor costs at a minimum here at Pure Happy Home. It’s easy to admit I really like coming up with creative ways to do that. I’m always excited to share with you how we have saved on a project because I want you to feel empowered to do the same.

Painted Wallpaper or Wall Mural

For Elsa’s bedroom walls we went with paint because it’s the best and least expensive way to go if you’re looking to save money. Wall paper can be costly, but it gives such a great look that I had to try to create something similar.

Choose Your Base Color

Elsa found a lovely periwinkle by Valspar called Simply Periwinkle. We used it on one wall because although Elsa loves this color, painting the whole room with it would have been too much for me. By the way, Very Peri is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2022 and Elsa chose this last year so she’s a trend setter now. Never would have chosen this color myself, but I love it almost as much as she does. The white of the other three walls was used on for the mural to add a delicate print with paint pens.

Choose Your Paint Pen Color(s)

Thankfully our oldest Mary is a talented illustrator and artist, (who also double majors in Business and History) so I knew who to call when Elsa and I decided to draw a mural.

These paint pens here are wonderful, and make a wall mural quite easy. You could use several different shades if you wanted a more colorful version. We decided to keep Elsa wall mural simple and only used one color against our base paint color.

Choose Your Pattern

Mary and I looked at some wallpaper prints with Elsa and decided on a floral motif. Mary then studied  flowers on Pinterest and got to work. We turned a flat wall into a beautiful, one of a kind flower garden.

Be Brave and Have Fun

I was in charge of leaves, but did try a few flowers of my won. One of the best reasons to try DIY projects is to be brave and exercise getting out of your comfort zones. I’m an abstract painter and that’s my happy place.

Drawing objects isn’t my strength, but I want to show my kids that attempting something new is worthwhile and you can have fun in the process. That’s how we grow! You don’t have to be good at everything you try, but try just the same.

We got Grandma in on the fun because, well that’s were we all get our talent. Growing up my mom showed me how to fearlessly try new things and make the most out of what you had. I love how she didn’t hesitate when I asked if she wanted to draw flowers with us.

Elsa got to put the finishing touch on her wall by adding a sweet little bumble bee. As my mom the avid gardener said, every garden needs it’s pollinators.

The paint pens were super easy to use. If you made a mistake you have a few seconds to correct it by quickly wiping it off with a damp rag. If you don’t like what you’ve created wait until it dries and then simply paint over it with the base wall paint. It erases what was there and you can start again.

If a wall mural is something you like give it a try! Your creativity will start to flow once you look at drawings online and you can recreate them with your own twist. It’s a special project and one you can accomplish in an afternoon.

My hope is that when Elsa lays down to sleep she’ll feel the love of her mama, sister and grandma when she looks at this wall. Each one of us shared a little of ourselves in this art.

When design, and especially home design, gets personal is when it’s at it’s best, Sentiment and connection is important to how we live and our homes should reflect this reality. It absolutely does not require you invest loads of money into your home, but you must invest some love.

A personal touch can add real meaning and warmth to our spaces. What are some ways you’ve invested love into your home?

Love the look – and the color is lovely. I’m not sure I would have the artistry or patience for this, but would love to try.

Rosemary we practiced on paper bags before the walls. Also, find a drawing of a simple flower and copy it a few times. I’d give it a try!
