Double the Style: Transforming One Dress into Two Elegant Pieces

by

I thrifted this H&M dress and turned it into two separate pieces.

Let’s call it Double the Style: Transforming One Dress into Two Chic Pieces.

My closet is a mix of many colors, but not green. So when I saw this gorgeous satin green material in the form of a dress, I threw caution and color analysis to the wind and grabbed it.

Thrifts stores and their low prices will make you do those things.

Well I got it home and it was a lot of green on my 5’10” frame.

It also clung to my thighs with static cling like force.

Something had to be done, but what?

Then it came to me. It would make a beautiful blouse, not too much green and so pretty with jeans or dress pants.

So much material was left over so I knew I had to use it and I also knew exactly how.

I love scarves, and it’s hard to have too many.

The extra fabric makes a beautiful scarf.

My daughter Mary is the model and I’m the photographer so she posed for photos for me.

It’s always fun dressing up your babies, even when they’re grown.

Here’s how to turn one dress into a blouse and scarf.

Step 1 – Cut the dress in two.

Decide where you want your blouse to lay and then add an inch and a half for the hem.

This is where you will cut and separate the dress in two.

Step 2 –  Cut the lower part of the dress along the seam.

Now that you have two piece of fabric, let’s focus on the lower part.

Cut the lower part of the dress along the seam.

For a straight line cut at the seam. This will form your new scarf!

Step 3 – Fold the scarf together right side out.

Fold the the short sides of the scarf together.

Make sure the unfinished edge is under the finished edge.

Step 4 – Iron the finished end of fabric over the unfinished end.

Line up the edges evenly and when happy with the form iron the finished end of the scarf over the unfinished edge.

Step 5 – Secure hem with Stitch Witchery

Secure the newly formed hem with Stitch Witchery.

To do this place Stitch Witchery between the two pieces of fabric and iron in place for about 30 seconds.

I cut my Stitch Witchery up into about 2 to 3 inch pieces.

As I hem I line them up end to end so there is no material on the hem without it.

Step 6 – Fold the ends of fabric on a diagonal then fold under unfinished edges and hem with Stitch Witchery.

Give a stylish finish to the scarf by paying attention to this detail.

Fold the ends of the scarf on a diagonal.

Then fold under the unfinished edges and hem with Stitch Witchery.

Step 7 – Hem the unfinished ends of the blouse with Stitch Witchery.

The last step and then you’ll have two separate pieces from one dress!

Fold over the unfinished ends of the blouse and iron them down.

Place Stitch Witchery between the two pieces of fabric and iron in place for about 30 seconds.

And you’re finished!

You’ve just doubled your style.

Stretch Your Budget and Wardrobe – Turn a Dress Into a Blouse and Scarf

I love both the scarf and the blouse.

Very glad I spend the time making two pieces out of one dress.

This took about 45 minutes of work while I visited with my daughter. Then got her to model for me so I didn’t have do my hair.

Don’t you just love those days when you can stay home in sweatpants, no makeup, and create?

Upcycling clothing is a great way to challenge and grow your creative side.

Would you give this project a try?
