Tired of too much stuff in your spaces, but you love home decor.

Here are 6 minimalist ways to simplify how you decorate your home.

It’s important to be honest about what truly brings you joy in your home.

So what in your home nurtures you? Not design trends or current ideas on home decor you’ll find in stores and online, but what truly feeds your soul?

Home is yours and it should be filled with what you love.

I’m especially thankful for our home when stressful times come, and they always come.

When the hard moments appear our homes give us opportunities to surround ourselves with the things that help us feel safe, nurtured and hopeful.

6 Minimalist Ways to Simplify How To Decorate Your Home

1. Find Your Spruce Up Day

On Saturdays and Sundays there seems to be more time in the schedule to take a little better care of our spaces.

These are prime times to spruce up and tidy.

Be thoughtful as to the coming week ahead and what you want to see and be surrounded with to nurture your soul.

2. Question An Objects Worth and Then Declutter

These are the days I also like to take a step back and access what material objects really bring me hope and happiness.

In other words, are the objects in my home doing their job of nurturing me and my family?

If the answer is no, it’s a sure sign they need to find a new home were they can do that for someone else. Declutter your spaces. Give items to a charity thrift shop (one of my favorite places to find new objects) or gift them to a friend you think will benefit from having them in their home.

Remove and give away things that are in your home that no longer bring you joy.

It’s ok to regret giving away some home decor, that normal. It’s important to realize that too much stuff is far more stressful than the one item who wish yo had kept.

3. Get Personal

Identify the objects you would never give away.

This should be a short list, but it’s important to set emotional value on decor pieces so you are clear as to which items are free to go, and which items you very much want to stay.

One of the pieces in my home I treasure is a Liberian wood carving.

The sculpture portrays a woman gracefully carrying a jar of water on her head, and her baby on her back. It’s one of those pieces that I would grab heading out the door if the house was on fire.

It makes me think of the strong and beautiful grandmother I never knew, and the place my father called home, Liberia, West Africa.

It also reminds me of the thousands of woman around the world who work so hard to provide the basics need of water to their children everyday.

A very valuable object because it beautifully nurtures me.

4.Figure Out What’s Really Important

Having that sculpture in my space for my children to see, nurtures me, gives me strength and keeps all things in perspective.

If something is truly important to you it will speak to you.

It will inspire you.

5. Be Honest and Prioritize What You Love

Above all else be honest with yourself regarding what makes you feel at home in your spacers.

If you love something, make it a part of your everyday life as much as possible.

Even though it’s almost a boring cliche and can be expensive, I love flowers. Why? As with many people flowers have the power to lift my spirits.

Although I’d rather not spend money on them during the Winter months here in Michigan, I do, because they serve well to nurture me.

Money is spend on flowers and it’s ok. They make life better for me in numerable ways.

6. Lead with Your Senses

Our basic primal selves need to have all our senses engaged in order to feel the safest and most fulfilled as we can.

This translates into soft blanket for touch, the lovely fragrance of candles for scent and the sweet sound of windchimes in our ears.

Don’t forget that cup of warm tea or coffee. Having your favorite mug handy at all times is definitely a way to nurture yourself.

Whatever object it is that engages your senses, include it in your home to nurture yourself.

I hope you will embrace selfcare and place those objects that both nurture you, and bring you joy throughout your home.
