Although I’m not ready for brightly colored Fall stems just yet, I’m ready to start adding neutral Fall color to our living room.
I already have a head start with Fall color thanks to our terracotta sofa.
By the way, did I ever tell you the thrifted sofa story?
Well…
During the pandemic I sold our sofa on Marketplace for more than I had paid for it. Remember it was hard to get furniture back then because of quarantine and production levels being so low?
Competition at thrift stores was heating up and good deals on furniture were becoming really hard to find.
Those new to thrifting didn’t know about the Restore, which was a blessing for us old school thrifters.
In case you don’t know, the Restore is run by Habitat for Humanity which was started by President Carter. It’s an amazing organization that builds affordable homes all around the world.
The Restore runs on donations from builders and DIYers. You can find building supplies at a fraction of the cost at the Restore. I’ve bought flooring, light fixtures, hammers, paint, molding, cabinetry, and even art.
It’s were I found our new sofa in perfect condition for a song! And by a song I mean under $100!
Anyways, back to adding Fall colors.
Warm neutrals and colors you’d find in nature are already abundant throughout our home.
The Fall palette simply makes me happy.
Adding Neutral Fall Color to a Living Room
When I say neutral Fall color I mean all different shades of Taupe, Creams, Browns, Terracotta, Grey, Rust, and of course Black.
The traditional leaf colors of yellow, orange and red will have to wait a few more weeks.
I found an incredible rug and it inspired me to tweak our family room a bit.
Here are the items I used to create this look on a budget.
Books for Fall Color
Books are one of my favorite styling tools.
Vintage or brand new they just make good sense.
In a digital world I like to keep books close. They’re what got me started with my love of interior design.
These warm and worn books on the console in back of the sofa add the muted neutrals I so love.
It takes awhile to find and build am assortment of vintage books. Sometimes it’s a hassles.
I got you!
Here is a curated collection of the best faux vintage books I could find.
All in beautiful neutral Fall colors.
Pillows for Fall Color
Pillow covers are a home decor enthusiasts secret weapon.
Do I have too many of them? Yes.
Am I going to change that? No!
Fall colors can be added in whatever tones you’re drawn to, then changed the next week if you’d like.
These pillow covers here and here work beautifully together.
Rugs for Fall Color
Adding a rug to any room is a complete game changer.
I like to layer my rugs because it’s an opportunity to bring in more texture.
In our family room I have this rug here which is basically indestructible. Our kids have put it to the test!
Over top that base rug I layered a vintage looking washable rug.
Cement Fruit
Autumn is a time for harvesting, and fruits like pears and apples make for great traditional Fall decor.
Mine are no longer available, but I found these cement pears here and here. Such good looking decor.
What is it about cement pieces? They have a classic, sculptural look to them that stands the test of time.
Wicker
Anything woven or wicker brings to mind Fall baskets filled with produce at harvest time.
I like to thrift mine as well as buy them new. For Fall colors I definitely go with warm brown and tan wicker pieces.
Texture is important in Fall decor. Wicker has plenty of the natural texture both visually and tactically.
Loving this round wicker tray here and this round container with lid here.
Candle Sticks
I love to have a modern piece of home decor in every room of our house.
Not only is it unexpected, it also brings a contemporary element to our traditional home.
This brass candle stick or holder pictured below is no longer being made, but I found some with a similar vibe for you.
Are you excited to decorate for Fall?
Get started slowly by adding a few saturated neutrals while you wait for the right time to add the bright Fall colors.
For now, how pretty is this budget-friendly Fall family room?
Thanks for being here friend, I appreciate you!
Until next time you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok.
