When I first saw this piece sitting sadly at the thrift store, I didn’t know it would become a repurposed planter turned indoor flower garden.
I only knew that I was fascinated by the look of it and wasn’t going to pass it by.
Over my many thrifting adventures I’ve learned a thing or two about quality.
This piece had it.
You could say it had the “it” factor, which is a combination of things.
Quality, charm, personality and potential.
That’s why I bought it and then let it sit in my garage for two years folks!
Little embarrassed, but it’s true.
Time doesn’t allow me to purchase every cool, but neglected thrift store find, but this planter was worth storing in the garage in order to spruce it up.
Repurposed Planter Turned Indoor Flower Garden
Supplies needed:
- Planter
- Potting soil
- Hand Spade
- Faux Stems as filler
- Flower food
- Annual Flowers
I’ve realized that part of why it took me this long to finally work on and fill this planter is because I didn’t have a good idea as to where to put it.
It didn’t look right on the ground and aside from that the color didn’t vibe with me.
Not only did it warrant a paint job, I knew I needed to find a way to make it part of my decor.
Then it hit me!
Why not repurpose this planter into an indoor garden planter for the Summer.
Flowers don’t have to be cut to being inside!
What to Look for When Repurposing a Planter for an Indoor Flower Garden
Wide Opening to the Planter
If you’d like create an indoor flower garden look for a planter that has a wide mouth.
Meaning, make sure you have enough space or square footage to add lots of flowers.
Shallow Depth to Planter
Look for a shallow planter.
Do this for a few reasons. First, the roots of your indoor flower garden won’t need to go very deep. This indoor garden will only bloom for the Summer when you have abundant sunshine coming in from the windows.
Secondly, instead of the floor you’ll want to display the planter on a surface of your home so you can easily see and enjoy it every day.
Choosing a shallow planter keeps it on the lighter side by not having it hold too much soil.
How I Repurposed a Planter
1. Paint It
Yes, paint is a DIY miracle tool. Not only is it cost effective it can cover almost anything.
This thrifted planter was made of concrete (I think) and only a few coats of paint got it looking beautiful.
I used two left over paint colors from my past projects to form a nice blue gray.

2. Waterproof You Planter with Plastic
After you’ve found a planter you can repurpose for an indoor planter make sure you lay down plastic on the base of your planter.
You need to water you indoor flower garden and you don’t want water to leak from your planter inside your home.
Laying down a plastic sheet in your planter makes sure whatever surface your planter is on stays dry.
If you’d rather have drainage make sure to slip a plate under your pot whenever you water it.
What Plants to Use for an Indoor Flower Garden?
3. Fill With Three Different Colors of Plants & Water Well
For your indoor flower garden you can choose between perennials and annuals.
If you decide to plant perennials have a spot for them to be planted in the garden outside in the Fall.
Or give them to someone who will plant them outside.
I went with impatiens, geraniums, and ivy.

4. Find A Sunny Spot for Your Planter
I decided the best place for my indoor flower garden is on our island.
I love the repurposed planted sitting in the center of the island. It’s the perfect centerpiece. Dramatic and cheerful!
How Much Light to Give an Indoor Flower Garden
How much light your indoor flower garden will need depends on the type of flowers you plant.
If you place your garden in front of a window with bright light it should be fine.
Watch for signs that it may need more light and then move it accordingly.
Why Create an Indoor Flower Garden?
You should create an indoor flower garden because it’s good for your mental health.
It’s beautiful, and you’ll get to enjoy it throughout the day while you live life.
I often wish I could see all the hard work I do on our flower beds outside while I’m inside.
Unless I stand in front of the window it just doesn’t happen. With this little indoor flower garden, I get to see them when I pull up to and leave the house.
