Make a Small Bedroom Look Larger – 5 Tips

Small Bedroom ideas

Most bedrooms are smaller in size. Easily learn how to make a small bedroom look larger-5 tips show you how.

Bedrooms are typically not the largest rooms in the home, and sometimes they’re quite small. In today’s high-priced real estate market every square inch counts. It only makes sense that you would want to utilize all the space you have in the best way possible.

A cozy bedroom is actually a nice feeling, but a cramped bedroom is not. Here are five simple ideas to take advantage of your bedroom’s space, while fully enjoying the room where you get the most rest.

1. Paint the Walls, Molding & Doors the Same Color

Often you’ll hear that you should put light colors on a wall if you want to make the room feel larger. This is true, however you can still get a voluminous feeling in a smaller room when using darker colors on the walls.

In Mary’s small bedroom we covered all four walls in a dark terra cotta color. We didn’t stop at just the four walls though we took this beautiful strong color to the doors and moldings as well. We did this because we didn’t want the two white doors to stand out against the wall color and break up the space. Painting them helped it all flow together.

By painting the crown molding and floor molding the same color as the walls there is no white line to interrupt the flow.  The color of the walls, doors and molding all blend together making a continuous backdrop for the pieces within the room.

Your eye sees the space as larger and more open because it’s all one color.

 2. Paint Furniture the Same Color As the Walls

Keeping with the same color continuity idea in mind, we also painted the large white armoire in her bedroom the same color as the walls. We wanted it to disappear against the terracotta walls instead of standing out.

The armoire takes up a good amount of the wall space. It was important for it to almost become part of the wall in order for it not feel crowded. Painting it to match the terracotta paint allowed the eye to see it as so.

 3. Center the Headboard On the Wall

Instead of putting a bed in the corner of a small room, center it with the headboard on a wall.

When we switched out Mary’s twin bed for a larger full size bed we were concerned this might make the room feel smaller. We decided to center the bed on the longest wall. Doing this allowed more wall space for the other pieces of furniture to be added in her room.

For such a small space this beautiful bedroom holds a good amount of furniture, and yet nothing feels crowded.

4. Place a mirror Opposite a Window

Mirrors are game changers. They not only reflect light which will make your room feel bigger, they reflect space and add dimension. Placing mirrors opposite windows is basically like adding another window to your bedroom, but without the need for any window treatment.

If you shop thrift stores or buy a used mirrored you can very inexpensively change the whole look of your bedroom. Making your small bedroom look larger and expanding your square footage doesn’t get any cheaper.

5. Use Multifunctional Furniture for Storage

Clutter can make any space seem smaller. The large armoire that I mentioned earlier is essential for holding much of Mary’s belongings and storage needs. We use the top of the armoire for storage as well. A beautiful basket is perched there holding seasonal accessories.

Her desk, not full of storage, serves several purposes. Mary sews here, paints, writes and works on her laptop here.

The night stands we found are large with a deep drawer and we also use baskets for storage underneath them. We went with sconces for lighting above the bed instead of lamps so the nightstand’s surfaces could be used for books, jewelry stand and other items she wanted near her bed.

You don’t have to choose a pale color for your walls or push your bed to the corner if you have a small space. These steps help make a small room look and feel larger.

What do you find helps make a small room appear more spacious?

I’d love to hear!

These are such great tips Maria! I would not have thought to paint a large piece of furniture the same color as the walls but that makes so much sense, plus it looks amazing! I bet your daughter is thrilled with this space!
