7 Self-Help Books I’m Listening to Right Now

Self Help Books new year

At the beginning of every New Year, I can’t help but get excited about the idea of a fresh new start. The question has to be asked, how can I improve my life and the lives of my family? How can I do better?

It’s not that things are terrible, things are good. It’s the possibilities, they hold such promise and I’m motivated by the opportunities we all have to become the best we can be.

Then I get tired just thinking about it all and need to take a nap.

The mere thought of personal growth can be exhausting!

One of the ways I like to challenge myself to grow is by reading or listening to self-help books.

There’s an unrealistic hope in the back of my mind that the latest self-help book can turn me into the organized homeschooling Mompreneur I want to be.

I guess it’s the renovator in me trying to renovate myself.

More and more I’m beginning to see that my focus should be on my strengths more than my weaknesses. I can get better at what I’m not good at, but why not get even better at what you’re gifted at and really interested in.

Which brings me back to self help books. I love them.

Over the last few months I ordered several from Audible and I really look forward to listening to them a little each day.

Here are 7 Self Help Books I’m Listening to Right Now.

I put in my ear buds and hit the track at the gym or hit the dishes at home. Sometime I’ll even listen to one to help me fall asleep.

I’ve had audible for many years and as a homeschooling mom have found it incredibly helpful. We have over a hundred books in our library and the kids listen a lot to classic books that come free with an Audible membership.

You can try Audible FREE for 30 days.

Unlike a novel, I rarely listen to or read a self help book from cover to cover. I like to listen to a few chapters and then take a break and go listen to another book for awhile.

However you like to read or listen, putting self help books in your library is a gift to yourself.

1. Radical Confidence

Oh my goodness this book! Whenever I get a book that’s read by the author it’s usually excellent to listen to. Lisa Bilyeu is a powerhouse and so down to earth with her advise and ideas. She inspires women in business and especially creative women of a certain age to just start already! Lisa came from very little and understands the challenges women face when it comes to chasing theirs dreams. Her enthusiasm for living life on your own terms will make you want to come back for a shot of her British moxie and motivation again and again.

2. The Road Back to You

This is my favorite bath tub listening material. It is a powerful book. Even if you haven’t taken the Enneagram, listen to this book. It will bring you so much clarity and hope. If you want to learn more about the Enneagram go here, it is life changing!

3. Rest

A truly fascinating read that will make you question how you have been using your life’s energy. With Scientific research Alex Soojung-Kim Pang lays out an argument for treating yourself kindly based on clinical research that proves it’s value. If you think you may understand what brings your body and mind true rest, read this because you may be surprised.

4. Atomic Habits

This will be a classic in the self help book category. Incredibly helpful because of it’s actionable ideas, this book held my attention with it’s creativeness. Building your life habits around what works for you is at the crux of Atomic Habits and it has helped me form daily plans that have yielded all kinds of benefits for me.

5. Minimalism for Families

We’re not minimalists, but my family needed this book. Honestly, we’ll always need this book. With five kids, four at home and one in college, we have a lot of stuff. It’s a constant challenge to not allow all we own to own us. In this book the author breaks down the difference between material wants and needs. After listening to even a little of Minimalism for Families you’ll want to go clean out your basement.

6. The Willpower Instinct

I’m not very far in this book but I’ve already learned to be easier on myself. Willpower is not a simple thing to come by and the author who holds a Ph.D describes how we can best use it to our advantage. Lots of detailed stories from studies on people’s buying habits, eating habits and work habits. Some stories are sobering and others encouraging, but all left me feeling less alone in my struggle to do what’s best and right.

7. The Power of Vulnerability

Brene Brown, God bless you. If you have yet to get your hands on this book, go buy it now. It’s worth every penny. Brene is forever entertaining, and has eye opening thoughts on how we can move through difficult, even devestating moments with grace.. Her deeply compassion views of how people struggle to be seen in the world, and how we can be our true selves as we do so is powerful.

All seven of these books are good investments.

Well, I wasn’t planning on buying any books today but I got 2! Atomic Habits I’ve heard lots about and Radical Confidence sounded great too. Thanks for the suggestions.
