simple diy improvements done in a day

As a homeowner it feels so good to be able to invest in our home’s financial value.

Here are 4 easy DIY improvements to increase home value.

Recently I just finished up a small area using these four improvements.

The result was so satisfying I decided to share it with you in the hopes you could try them out yourselves.

It actually took longer to find the tools we needed than to do the work itself.

Organizing our DIY tools and supplies will have to be another project I get to soon. In the meantime check out the difference using these basic DIY improvements made in our foyer.

4 Easy DIY Improvements to Increase Home Value

This area of our foyer was covered by a window seat that used to be here. I use the term window seat generously because it really was a bookcase with a large piece of wood screwed into the top. It worked well, but it was not cute so I put a piece of fabric over top. That looked great, but it would slide off every day and I’d have to adjust it which was annoying. It had to go! I decided I’d find something to put there eventually.

Until them we were looking at this. Not inspiring.

It was an opportunity to invest in our home’s value so we got to work.

1.Update Floor Molding

Rip out old molding with the help of a dog, a hammer and a paint scrapper.

As you can see the gap left is too big and that brings us to our next Simple DIY Improvement.

2. Fill In Wood Flooring Gaps

So much easier than you might think. We cut wood slates to the size of the gap then simply glued it in.

Enzo’s judging me for not using the nail gun, but half of this will be covered by the molding so I did not bother.

Fill in any other smaller gaps with wood filler. I love this stuff and use it generously.

3. Repairing Damaged Walls

Peeling walls like this just look terrible, however they’re an easy fix. Spackle spread on and then you let it dry. When it’s hard you sand it to the exact heigh you need. After this it’s ready for paint.

Now we’re finally ready for that lovely floor molding.

What a difference three easy DIY improvements can make!

Just one more detail and this wall will be complete. Can you guess what I’m talking about?

4. Painting a Vent Cover

An ugly, chipped and glaringly white vent cover is a minor thing, but it’s so satisfying to change it up. I spray painted a taupe color to help it blend into the floor better.

It can be challenging to find the right color of spray paint. Write down what works best for you and keep track of it for the next time you have a project needing spray paint.

Let’s get one more before and after of our foyer!

Do you see yourself tackling any of these four home improvement projects?

I’d love to hear which ones in the comments below.

It’s amazing how just small jobs make a big impact. I use spray paint to improve so many things, like the vent covers too. And that look by Enzo – looks like you might have been interrupting his nap.

Hi Maria! Wow! I wish I had read this post when I owned my old house in Maine. Great advice and you really break down the process into bite size steps. I love the before and after. These are the types of projects that over whelm me and I just keep putting off because it’s not “critical”. Love your blog!
