Save Money with a Thrifted Fall Table Setting

Have you been shocked by your grocery bill lately? I decided it was time to save money so I completely thrifted a Fall table setting.

Thrifting and Fall don’t seem to have much in common, except they do!  Fall is a time to harvest and Thrift store are ripe for the picking.

Check Out Every Thrift Store In Your Neighborhood

This Fall table setting came together with some planning and a few great thrift store finds.

Focusing on saving money in certain areas allows me to save in others.  For a month of so I’ve been shopping Thrift stores. If I’m out and have ten minutes I’ll stop at a Thrift store just to see if they have something that would work for my Fall table setting. save money thrifted Fall table setting diy

Hit those Thrift stores and start collecting items little by little. Thrift stores do not disappoint!

I found several pieces for a Fall table setting that make for a beautiful gathering of textures and neutral tones.

We began designing this table setting with the centerpiece base which is made of two woven boxes and florist foam. Natural sprigs of various two kinds of eucalyptus leaves, wheat and pinecones filled in the box.

Keep Record of What You’ve Already Found

As you start collecting items a theme will emerge. Take photos of the items you have at home so when you’re out shopping you can refer to them and better gauge what you need at the Thrift stores.

The thrifted items I found for our Fall table setting .
  • two natural fiber containers
  • black ceramic salad bowls
  • chunky stoneware plates
  • white cotton napkins
  • -wine glasses
  • napkin rings
  • table clothes
  • dried leaves

Shop Your House to Fill In the Gaps

Don’t forget to shop your house. The rest of our Fall table setting I had on hand, but was bought new in the past.  We all have so much more than we think we may have tucked in the corners of closets or under beds. Guilty!

Teach Your Kids How to Be Frugal

Our kids really look forward to Thanksgiving. I mean who can blame them, food, family, and relaxing. Our boys are old enough now to truly be helpful in getting ready for the special Holiday. After many lovely Thanksgivings meals this year I wanted them to better understand how much planning and preparing it takes for a successful Thanksgiving.

Not only did they make the menu, they also did the grocery shopping, and as usual will help cook. What a blessing!

Use Your Creativity to Keep Costs Down

In addition to this I wanted my boys to get a feel for how much work and thought go into making a beautiful table scape, so I had them help me with the centerpiece.

To make it we used two shallow woven boxes to run the length of the table. We filled them with florist foam covered with dried Spanish moss and then arranged red eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, and dried wheat in the foam.

After this the boys strategically placed pine cones in the gaps making sure the base of the centerpiece was well covered. It makes for a warm seasonal arrangement that doesn’t obstruct your view of the person sitting across from you. They did a great job, and since we homeschool I’ll call this an art lesson in floral design.

Pay Extra Attention to Your Centerpiece

When planning any special occasion dinner, don’t skimp on the centerpiece. It adds such drama while makes any meal feel more important. Get inspiration from Pinterest then shop your house and yard for pieces that might work well together.

Mix, match and group objects together in varying heights. Your eye will become better and better at choosing colors that compliment each other.

Here are some great pieces I found in case your interested in picking them up.

One last tip when putting together a Fall table. Have fun! Nothing has to be perfect. There are no hard and fast rules you need to follow when setting a table. It’s your home. Bring to the table the things you love, the food you love and most importantly, the ones you love. This doesn’t cost you anything.
