Hey friends! A simple project to show you today that has made an incredible difference in our home.
If you live in a builder-grade home like us you probably have a sliding glass door. They do a good job of letting the light in, but they’re short on architectural beauty. Our sliding doors have remained undressed and it’s been fine. With woods in the back of our house we don’t need window treatments for privacy, but I’ve been wondering lately what they might look like with curtains.
During these short, cold days of Winter, I’ve been thinking it might be nice to have curtains. Not only do curtains block out a cold draft, they also give a cozy feeling at night.
Our dining table is positioned right in front of our sliding glass doors looking out onto the back deck and woods beyond. Although there’s really no other place to put our dining table we love it here because we can look outside onto the trees. I wanted very simple curtains to frame the view of nature and not compete with it.
In our family room I’ve used these. We went with them again for our sliding glass door and hemmed them to get the exact length we wanted. The same design of curtain rod was used for the sliding glass doors as we chose for the family room. The spaces are next to each other and the continuity between the two looks great. We used this one here.
Contrast always makes me happy so the strong look of the slim black curtain rod and creamy white curtains works perfectly. These drapery clips are worth every penny and are a staple when hanging affordable window treatments.
Jeremy hung the curtain rod much higher than the window itself. The position it’s in is even with the kitchen cabinet that’s directly next to the sliding door. It’s balanced alignment makes a for smooth transition for the eye.
Hanging the curtains higher also causes the simple builder grade sliding door to seem much more visually important. Basically it just looks better than if we had hung it at the top of the window trim. Our sliding door is 72 in long. To ensure the maximum amount of light was let in, hello grey Michigan Winters you are annoying, we chose a curtain rod that was 84 inches long.
The extra length on either side of the window allows the curtain to hang on either side of the glass, but not over it. It frames the window without blocking light while still covering the glass at night if there is a cold draft or we want a cozy feeling.
Now that the curtains are up I think we should have done it a long time ago. I love the look. The whole space has been elevated and curtains give the dining area seems finished look. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what your builder grade sliding doors would look like with curtains. Do you have curtains around your sliding door? Would you hang them high like we did?
