This has to be one of my best finds ever!

Check out how we transformed a thrifted upholstered bed into a custom masterpiece.

Imagine my surprise when I walked into Salvation Army to find a beautiful brand new gray upholstered bed waiting for me!

And get this, it was marked $35! Whaaat?

How We Transformed a Thrifted Upholstered Bed into a Custom Masterpiece

Finding a diamond in the rough at one of my beloved thrift stores can be exhilarating for me. It’s such a great feeling to save money, and help the environment.

This journey began with such a discovery – a brand new upholstered bed that was just waiting for a bit of customization to make it truly ours.

Why did I decide to buy this thrift find?

First I talked to the manager who told me the bed and headboard were brand new!

It had come in the box, but was missing some of it’s screws. The store marked it low ($35) because they were running out of room on the store floor.

I double checked it was a King, (it was) looked for damage and when I saw there was non, said SOLD!

This upholstered bed was the start of our bedroom makeover. It was the upgrade I didn’t know we needed, but absolutely love now that we get to enjoy it every day.

Aside from the missing screws, there were a few things about it that were problematic, but I knew I could fix the challenges and that I had found our new bed.

WHAT HAD TO CHANGE ON OUR UPHOLSTERED BED?

Missing Screws

The missing screws were the easiest fix. Thankfully I have a family run hardware store only five minutes from our house.

I simply showed them what I had and they found more of what I needed for the upholstered bed.

Wood Slates

We love our box spring, but this bed had wood slates and no box spring.

Instead of missing out on the comfort of our box spring under our mattress, we simple put our existing metal bed frame and box springs inside our new thrifted bed.

Unfinished Sides

Strangely the sides of our bed were not upholstered in the same gray fabric and the mattress did not cover this fact. That had to change for my aesthetic needs.

How We Transformed a Thrifted Upholstered Bed

Brand New Upholstered Bed

Step 1: Reinventing the Beds Foundation

Our first customization involved the bed’s foundation. The original design had slats, but we preferred the sturdy support of a box spring.

We built the bed frame, discarding the slats and instead, nestled our existing box spring and bed frame within the new upholstered structure.

This simple tweak made a significant difference in the bed’s comfort and stability.

Step 2: Aesthetic Overhaul of Our New Thrifted Bed

The second challenge was aesthetic. The bed, while new, had sides covered in black fabric, contrasting with the gray at the foot and headboard.

Our solution? A trip to the Restore, where we found light blue-gray upholstery fabric, closely matching the bed’s original hue.

After measuring and cutting the fabric to size, we neatly ironed the edges for a polished look.

The fabric was then laid over the black sides, and with the magic of stitch witchery, we seamlessly fused the new fabric to the bed.

This fabric bonding technique, activated by the heat of an iron, worked like a charm, adhering the fabric securely to the bed.

The Result: A Budget-Friendly, Bespoke Bed

The transformation was remarkable. Not only did the bed now support a box spring for added comfort, but the harmonized fabric colors gave it a high-end, custom appearance.

This DIY project was not just a testament to our creativity, but also to the possibilities of thrift store finds.

With a little imagination and effort, we turned a standard piece into a unique, budget-friendly focal point of our bedroom.

**Tips for DIY Enthusiasts:**

1. **Look Beyond the Surface:** Thrift store finds can be gems in disguise. Look for quality structures and think creatively about how you can alter them.
2. **Fabric Matters:** Choose upholstery fabric that complements your existing décor. It’s not just about the color, but also texture and durability.
3. **Embrace the Tools:** Learning to use tools like stitch witchery can be game changers in DIY projects.

Our journey in customizing this thrifted upholstered bed demonstrates that with a bit of DIY spirit, you can create something truly special and unique for your home.

It’s comfortable, stylish, and most importantly, it’s a reflection of our personal taste and hard work.

Let me know what you think about of furniture flip. I’d love to hear!
