Who doesn’t love a beautiful Christmas centerpiece on your table or kitchen island? A centerpiece sets the tone for a room, or dinner celebration, and is especially festive at Christmas. It’s the added touch that goes a long way to make a home feel special. With so much going on and even more expected of us during this time of year, a centerpiece should be easy and affordable. I put together a nature inspired centerpiece that’s a mixture of new and thrifted pieces. It was very affordable and I’ll break down the cost with you so you can see where I splurge and where I save. I love how it turned out and I thought I’d share it with you.
We typically put our Christmas tree up in our music room which we can’t see if we’re in our kitchen. This year I was really missing the festive look of lights at night so I came up with a way to have some Holiday cheer while I was working on dinner or doing dishes. If your Christmas tree isn’t visible from you kitchen you may want to try this idea.
Here’s what I used to make this Christmas centerpiece.
Wicker Tray – The natural woven tray I used is from the Magnolia Hearth & Hand line at Target. It’s sold out, but here is another from that line which is similar and really good looking. The tray gives the centerpiece it’s base shape and you can build from there.
Wreath – To keep costs down I always check the thrift stores before buying new. I found this wreath and envisioned adding natural objects to it right away. If you can’t find a wreath you like at a Thrift, here is one in stock that would be a perfect centerpiece foundation to work from. Check measurements and make sure that your wreath size will fit inside your tray.
Candle Holder – I found a beautiful candle holder at an antique store and it was the inspiration for this Christmas centerpiece. The candle holder is the actual center of the centerpiece. Choose one that has height like this one here and width like this one here. We light our non toxic scented candle everyday this time of year. The lovely fragrance is a real mood booster for our whole family. The other day our 13 year walked in the door from practice and excitedly said, “It smells like Christmas!”
Fairy Lights – Were have these been all my life? These teeny, light weight and malleable lights are probably my favorite find this Christmas season. I had heard of them, but these are better than I’d imagined. You can hide them under your foliage or lay them on top of your arrangement for an airy look. Add as much sparkle as you feel you need to light up your centerpiece. I keep ours on almost all day because I like to see their shimmer even if it’s not dark outside. At night they look especially pretty.
Greenery – I foraged our yard and garden for several variations of foliage. You’d be surprised what you can find even if you live in the suburbs or city. Take a garden clipper or scissors with you when you’re out running errands and slip a few branches from an evergreen on the side of the road. Of course, never clip foliage from someone’s yard without there permission. One last thing on adding fresh greenery and foliage. Here is my secret to keeping your greenery crisp in a waterless centerpieces..it helps them last for weeks. They also come in green here.
Dried lemon – Drying citrus is such a great way to preserve it’s bright color. I followed the instructions here to dry our lemons. After drying I slipped a few into the centerpiece making sure to hide the parts that got a bit burnt in the oven. The more texture you can add to your centerpiece the better.
Wood cuttings – We cut our own little Charlie Brown Christmas trees this year. Read more on them here. The trunk needed to be trimmed so we had a few slices of wood left over. Pine and spruce wood smells lovely and I laid them in the centerpiece with the other natural objects. It makes me so happy to bring the outdoors in. Pinecones – Throughout history pinecones have been symbols of human enlightenment and regeneration. You can find all different kinds in various shapes and sizes.
