3 Ways to Transform Home Decor with White Paint

by

The power of paint never gets old to me, never!

Here are 3 ways to transform home decor with white paint.

It’s amazing how easy it is to turn almost anything into something fresh and new with a simple coat of paint.

White paint is especially useful when decorating on a budget because it goes well with every color. Whether it’s latex paint or spray paint, it’s uses are limitless. So often I’ll see something and like the shape of the piece, but the finish won’t work in our home. That’s when I imagine it with a coat of white paint and then get excited about finding another great piece to take home.

My other favorite color to use on found pieces is black which instantly ups the wow factor when used. Both black and white are versatile colors in any home.

3 Ways to Transform Home Decor with White Paint

Although it was hard to choose (because I have so many pieces waiting for me to paint them) I hauled three pieces up from our basement to show you how amazing painting something white can be.

They were painted with a grey white, an ivory, and a bright white to transform them into my vision of crisp, clean and neutral home decor.

1. Ceramic Planter

This planter has a modern shape with rounded sides. It reminded me of a cement planter I had seen somewhere and I knew by brushing on a cooler, somewhat gray, white paint I could achieve a similar look.

After applying the first coat over the original dark grey finish I let it dry them went back and dabbed paint on with the tip of my brush. This gave it the rough, textured look of cement.

2. Cake Stand

Did a double take when I saw this cake stand while thrifting. If you’ve read the blog for awhile you know I love to thrift shop. I wrote a post on how i decorated our whole family room from thrifted find here.

The top of the cake stand is made of metal and because food might be touching it at some point, I went with spray paint for a thin, oil based finish. I first used this spray paint here because it’s also a primer with rust prevention.

There was some rust damage on the metal surface and I wanted to cover it before putting on the final coat. The base of the cake stand is quite pretty so I left it as is and matched the spray paint to the same original warm ivory color. It didn’t take me long at all to finish this project. Remember to use a respirator to make the job super easy.

We like this one here. The key to spray painting is layering several thin coats on top of each other, and allowing with long drying times in between coats.

3. Wicker Waste Basket

This wicker waste basket is one of my cutest finds recently, and so cute we may need to find another use for it other than as a waste basket.

It’s perfect in our youngest’s bedroom and she may want to fill it with he3r toys. The delicate design is super sweet, and although the cheery yellow made me smile, it too needed a good coat of white paint. I chose a bright white spray paint because although I’ve done it in the past, painting wicker is very time consuming.

Again, wear a mask when spray painting. We have used this one here which made the process quick and painless.

With so many things on our To Do list’s these days it’s always satisfying to get a project done in an afternoon. These three projects are easy to accomplish and quick, I promise. Choose something that needs some white paint and go have some diy fun!

The best part is painting can be a relaxing job, and allows you a little time to just think. So go ahead and put those ear buds, head phones or if necessary ear plugs in and zone out while being productive.

Hope I’ve inspired you to pick up a can of paint or a paint brush and get to work. With just a little effort you’ll have a new piece to admire!

Do you have something that could use a coat of white paint?
