Elsa’s Bedroom Makeover

BEFORE

before of bedroom

In my last post I showed you the mood boards (you can see them here) we are working from as we design Elsa’s little girl bedroom. Side note, working with my nine year old daughter has been more fun than I anticipated. My girl’s a dream client. Here’s the before, before of her room. We put LV floors and window treatments in since this photo was taken.

Periwinkle Accent Wall

If you are familiar with my style you know I love neutrals and small pops of color. It’s always been this way with a few exceptions over the years. I know what I like when I see it and I’ve always just followed what made me happy when it came to design. When designing my daughter’s room and her sibling’s rooms I’ve always been very aware that they too have their own particular taste. It’s important to me they express themselves through color and design.

When Elsa said she wanted periwinkle on her bedroom walls I was determined to make that happen for her. Once I found out that the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 was Very Peri, I was even more on board. My baby girl has good taste. You can read more about the Pantone Color of the Year here.

Giving Your Child the Color They Want in Their Bedroom

Well the Very Peri is on the wall and it’s very, well periwinkle. She loves it and I’m good with it being just an accent wall. We’ll add a few more touches of periwinkle, but in addition she also wanted a sherbet pink color. Um, this was pushing it, but I reminded myself that I want my kids to express themselves, and this is her bedroom.

A Colorful Painted Door

The solution was to add this sherbet pink color to the back of her bedroom door. This way she gets a huge amount of the color she wants in her room, but I almost never have to even see it. Genius right? Happy child, happy mom.

Toy Chest Flip

Another project I finished was painting this chest I found at a thrift store. It’s covered in vinyl, but they didn’t stop me from painting it. I hauled out my trusty Kilz primer and covered it with one coat. Then I took a gloss white paint that I knew would be easy to scrub clean and gave the chest two coats. We had some left over paint from another project that’s a soft pink which we painted the inside with. Now it’s truly worthy of a little girl’s room.

Keeping Little Feet Cozy

A much less exciting addition to her room is a wool rug I found on marketplace. I like rugs and carpet in bedrooms, especially in Elsa’s room because she plays on the floor a lot. We live in a cold climate so much of the year having a rug underfoot is a must if you want a room to be cozy. This neutral, oatmeal colored rug doesn’t compete with the periwinkle and sherbet pink alongside it, plus it gives a calming vibe.

With walls and flooring decided along with a cute toy chest ready for use, we’re well on out way to designing the bedroom of Elsa’s dreams.

What’s your favorite idea, the painted door or the painted toy chest?
