Jute Rope Vase Craft

Do you have several glass vases floating around your house? Turn them into something beautiful and textured with a jute rope vase craft.

I’ve always kept the thin glass vases that come with commercial flower bouquets. You can also find a huge selection of these vases at thrift stores. Obviously, most people are smart about not accumulating things and give them away. Note taken!

Buy or Thrift a Vase

I had several glass vases in my collection, but also went out and thrifted another. Give me any reason to hit the thrift store and I’ll probably take it. I choose my top three vase contenders and decided to give them a makeover.

Earlier this Summer I had purchased some jute rope while at the local Farm & Fleet store. I thought we would need it to tie down some cow panels. That’s a while other story, and no we don’t have cows, but I digress. Turned out no rope was needed but I had already opened it up so home it came with me.

Find some Jute Rope

Not one to waste things I knew this good-looking jute rope needed to be used, but how? It took a few months and then it hit me. By then my garden was producing flowers and they needed vases to show off their beauty. Out came the plan thin glass vases and that’s when it hit me.

Wrap them in the jute rope!  The Jute Rope Vase Craft idea was conceived.

Jute Rope

Glass Vase

Glue Gun

Glue Sticks

Scissors

Glass Cleaner

Craft Tip #1 – Have a backup glue gun

If you’re going to attempt a craft jute rope vase you are going to need a good glue gun. Not only that you’ll want to have lots of glue sticks on hand. This diy jute rope craft was dead in the water for a day when I ran out of glue sticks. The twine rope is heavy enough that you need to add generous amounts of hot glue for it to adhere exactly where you want it on the vase. If you do a lot of home décor crafts you know this, but I don’t and had to learn the hard way.

Before you start this jute rope craft, clean your glass vases well with glass cleaner. Doing this will help the hot glue to stick well which will stop the jute rope from unwinding from the vase.

Don’t cut any of the rope before you begin. You won’t know how much you need and I found simply unrolling it as you go is best.

Craft Tip #2 – You can never have too many glue sticks

Find a beginning point at the base of your vase and apply a large amount of hot glue then press the end of the rope into it and hold until it has cooled to the touch. Only then should you move on to applying more glue and rope. This will give you a strong base and anchor the rest of the rope.

Craft Tip #3 – Try a few different vase shapes

The three different shaped vases give you examples of the various looks’ jute rope can give a vase. I love the texture it adds to them all.

I used very thick jute rope, but almost any kind of twine or rope would work. A great resource for thin jute rope crafts can be found here and here.

Last Step

After the vases were finished I snipped the longest stray strands from the rope. The end product is a big change. Using jute rope to decorate a glass vase give a huge transformation. Definitely worth the time and effort.

Play with the look you want. For the tallest vase I only covered some of it with rope because it was an interesting look, and I like seeing some of the leaves and steams of the flowers.
