Designing a Thrifted Christmas Tablescape

Christmas dining room

As I’m sure you know by now, Thrifting is one of my favorite things to do. Since I blogged about our thrifted Thanksgiving table setting here, I thought a Christmas tablescape was in order as well.

Everything on this table was either bought at a thrift store, an estate sale, or purchased second hand through either Facebook marketplace or a garage sale. Even the table and chairs were thrifted, but more on those later.

I find myself in a thrift store at least three times a week. My thrift stops sometimes last 4 minutes. I try to always go quickly and methodically, looking for what’s on my list, but also what grabs my attention. Some days I get to stroll and take my time. These trips are sweet because if I’m strolling I’m alone, and use the time to mind wander as I look and shop. As a creative, this is when my brain really gets to soar and I come up with some great ideas, if I do say so myself.

The inspiration for this Christmas tablescape was definitely the gorgeous emerald green glass wear I found a month ago. Green is popular this Christmas so it worked out perfectly to make them the crowning jewel of this table setting. The only objects that were bought new were the silverware and the chargers. The silver we’ve had since Jeremy and I were married, and I don’t remember what we paid for them, but they are high quality. The chargers are from the Dollar Tree and were a dollar a piece.

The woven placemats were such a nice thrifting surprise. The original price tags were still on them and they were in perfect condition, as was almost everything I found. If bought new, chargers can really ruin a budget-friendly table setting so I was glad to find these.

After deciding to go with the green glass I knew I wanted to continue on with the color palette and bring in more green. Green is such a diverse color and is found in so many different hues and tones. When I couldn’t find any napkins that I liked well enough, I decided to make my own from a beautiful table cloth I saw hidden in the Christmas section of one of my favorite thrift stores. It was half off which made it an even better find.

All the greenery for our centerpiece was foraged from the woods in back of our home and our Fall garden. Using nature in your table settings always gives such a homemade and authentic feel. Whenever I can I like to bring the outdoors in. It’s a reminder of our connection to the earth and one of the reasons I’m so passionate about thrifting. Buying used is a sustainable practice that doesn’t harm our planet.

Here’s a list of the thrifted pieces I used and their prices.

Green Glass wear                                $1 each              $6

Wine Glasses                                        $1.50 each        $6

Large Ceramic Plates                            $1.50 each        $9

Small Ceramic Plates                             $1 each             $6

Woven Placemats                                  $0.50 each         $3

Napkins (made from a table cloth)                                     $2

Craft Twine                                                                         $0.50

Brass candlesticks                            various prices            $8

Candle sticks                                                                       $1.50

Table cloth                                                                            $5

Greenery from our yard                                                        free

The grand total for this Christmas table setting was less than $50 dollars. That is a pretty great deal. It’s so much fun for me to see what I can create with thrift store finds. Almost like a puzzle that needs to be solved and with a beautiful result. My hope is always that I inspire you to create a home you love within your budget. It is possible.
