5 Ways to Save Money on Furniture

Hey friends! So glad to have you stopped by. If you actually came over to our house I’d give you a tour, but only of our first level. If you gave me a whole week’s notice I’d give you a full tour. With a family of seven we need a little, make that a lot, of time to pick up.

One of my favorite things to do when I have friends over is to play a little game with them I like to call the, “What’s Not Used” game.  It’s basically what you think it is. We walk around our house and I make you guess what items I bought new. It’s a pretty hard game because I buy most of our home decor and other household items used or second-hand.

People are always so surprised by how few items in our house are new. I love seeing the shock on their faces and explaining how I get my deals. How I buy furniture really saves us money. Thought I’d share with you how I do it!

5 Ways to Save Money on Furniture

Can you say, huge savings? Because that’s what you’ll get when you shop for pre-owned or pre-loved furniture. The best ways I’ve found to furnish a bedroom and save money are as follows.

Facebook Marketplace

A treasure trove. I’m not always the first to get the incredible buy, but once in a while, I’ll win. Browse the marketplace often for a higher chance of finding what you what. Be extra polite when dealing with sellers. They, just like you. appreciate folks going the extra mile with please and thank you. I’ve had sellers hold pieces for me when they could have sold them to others because they wanted me to have their item simply because I was polite and nice in our messaging. Thrift Stores

Hands down my favorite place to shop for furniture. Often the contents of whole homes are donated when someone retires to a condo. I find older, high quality furniture at thrift stores. Solid wood, well build pieces that they just don’t make anymore. I’m almost never hesitant to paint them either. The prices at thrift store can be out of this world good when the store becomes too full they often discount their inventory. Click here to see the before of this thrifted bench.

Mom and Pop Outlet Stores

When it comes to mattresses I won’t buy used. However, I will buy discounted! If you can find one near you a small mattress outlet can be a great place to find quality sleep mattresses and low costs. We bought Mary’s mattress from a Mom and Pop outlet store in our town. They buy overstocked mattresses at deep discounts then pass the savings onto their customers. Be sure to learn as much as you can from the store owner about their process before buying to ensure you’re getting a good deal.

Think Ahead, Buy Ahead

We bought a headboard and two end tables months before we even knew we were giving Mary’s room a makeover. I found the brand new headboard at thrift store a year ago for $20. I decided it was easy enough to store away in our basement for the day we would need it or a friend would want a full size headboard. Glad I did because it works perfectly in Mary’s room with her new mattress. The night stands I bought this Summer for $40 each. They’re vintage and solid wood. The plan was for our youngest son to flip them so he’d have some spending money. He never got around to doing it, and instead we used them in Mary’s room makeover. Family & Friends

We know and trust our family and friends. Get the word out if you need a mattress or another piece of furniture for your bedroom. We humans want to help when we can so give someone a reason to show their love and support of you. You’d be surprised how much we have in our homes and will either loan or give to those they care about. You can do the same down the road. This is a very sustainable and mentally healthy way to live.
